Letterman and Rather.
How are you doing today?

It seems like a simple enough question. But for the citizens of the U.S., it's not simple at all. There is a sadness the likes of which I have not seen in my lifetime. A sadness that has stripped away all pretense and facade from most of the people in the street, and as we've seen now, from television personalities as well. I've seen Letterman, Dan Rather and Leno, all cry or choke back tears on camera. I don't mention this because America is obsessed with celebrities, even though that was a true statement before the 11th, but because I could never imagine a circumstance that could bring emotionally hardened individuals to that point. I don't mean that they are hard-hearted, but they have suffered enough personal insults in their careers to be thick-skinned. For the average person, the hurt and sadness is almost too much to bear. I told myself that I probably just needed one big cry in order to ward off all of the little crying, but I've yet to develop a strategy to keep my heart out of my throat.
